Trauma

When the Past Still Affects the Present

Experiences of childhood trauma can continue to affect how you feel about yourself, relate to others and navigate everyday life. This may include psychological or emotional abuse, physical abuse, family violence, sexual abuse or neglect. Whatever your experience, you deserve to be listened to with care and without judgement.

The effects of trauma can look different for everyone. You may struggle with overwhelming emotions, low self-esteem, trust or closeness in relationships. At other times, you might feel numb, disconnected from yourself or your surroundings, or as though you are going through life without feeling fully present. Physical pain and other health difficulties may also be part of your experience.

Space to Heal at Your Own Pace

Individual therapy offers space to explore how past experiences may be affecting you now. You do not need to share every detail of what happened before you feel ready. Your psychologist will work with you to understand your needs, build trust and find an approach that respects your pace and choices.

Support may include developing ways to manage difficult emotions, feel more connected to the present and respond to yourself with greater compassion. Therapy can also help you explore relationship patterns, recognise your boundaries and strengthen your sense of safety and self-worth. Your priorities help guide what you work on together.

Recovery is personal, and it can take time. Our clinical psychologists can offer understanding and support as you work towards feeling more connected to yourself, your relationships and the life you want to lead.
